CRABTREE NEWS

December 9, 2019

This morning children in main school wrapped up warm and set off for St Mary's Church in Bulwell for our annual Carol Concert.  The concert is a true highlight of Crabtree's Christmas celebrations and it was wonderful to see so many adults there to support the children.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back, we hope you had a lovely half term. This half term, our topic will be the Vikings. As part of this topic, we will be going on a trip to the University of Nottingham to learn about them. We will be taking part in lots of exciting workshops to extend our knowledge of the topic.

This trip is on Friday 29th November and will take place during the school day. We will be leaving at 9:30am on the day and will return to school by 1pm so the children can be dropped off and collected at the usual times. The cost of this trip is £2 and this will need to be paid before we go on the trip.

A Permission Slip is available to download here

Yours sincerely,

The Year 4 Team

During the Summer Term Mrs Baldwin, Mrs Robinson and selected pupils will be visiting Stonebridge City Farm in St Ann's.

On arrival, our little farmers will be met by an experienced tour guide who will lead them on a tranquil tour of the gardens - sharing interesting facts about what life is like on an urban farm. The children will also have the opportunity to get to know the bunnies and guinea pigs in the petting barn before they head out onto the farm to meet the larger residents.

So far we have made two visits to Stonebridge and the children have thoroughly enjoyed the farming experience and are enthusiastic to visit again in the future.

We would like to thank the animals and humans at Stonebridge City Farm for making us feel so welcome.

Today our year 2 pupils visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster to coincide with their topic on animals.

After getting themselves into twos, the children boarded the coach and set off on the journey to Doncaster.

When we arrived at the park we were lucky enough to see polar bears, a pride of lions, giraffes and even made some new friends in Wallaby Walkabout.

The children would like to thank the animals and humans at the Wildlife Park for making their visit the enjoyable experience that it was.

After first joining us last year, the notorious Christmas hating Grinch once again joined our Year 3 children for their Christmas dinner and showed how much he has embraced the Christmas spirit that Crabtree is famous for.

It would appear that the Grinch truly did manage to ward of the anti Christmas sentiment - like we previously thought - and that his heart really did grow three times it's normal size!

We look forward to welcoming the Grinch again in another twelve months.

Earlier this evening we were delighted to be part of the Bulwell Christmas Festival in Bulwell Market Place. Our choir performed two songs and we are very proud of them and their performance.

Today our fantastic team of Christmas tree specialists assembled and, with a little bit of help from Mrs Round and Mrs Marshall, set off to Sherwood Forest to choose two Christmas trees that will take pride of place in our school.  We are sure you are aware that choosing a Christmas tree is no easy task, but our specialists had been specifically chosen for this mission by their teachers and were up for this most festive of challenges.

Whilst in the forest, the children received a letter from Santa Claus who required their help with finding his lost reindeer. This was a very demanding mission, but we are relieved to say that the children managed to find the missing animals - which means Santa will still be able to carry out what we believe is his extremely vital work on Christmas Eve.  Phew!

We’d like to thank our Christmas tree specialists for selecting two great Christmas trees and for ensuring that Crabtree saved Christmas.

Well done!

Today our Year 6 pupils visited the Palace Theatre in Newark where they enjoyed a live performance of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful.  Year Six have been reading this incredibly moving story as part of their World War 1 topic and all the children seemed to enjoy seeing characters they know so much about being brought to life on stage before their eyes.

On behalf of the pupils and staff in Year 6 we would like say a huge thank you to the cast and crew who made our visit the memorable experience that it was.

There are a few tired faces amongst our London adventurers this morning after their three day residential in our capital city came to an end.  All the children and staff had a fantastic time exploring the streets of London with many of you telling us via twitter how your child couldn't stop talking about the experiences they had, had.

We are delighted to say the children represented our school beautifully and are truly a credit to you all.  We had planned an action packed programme for them that started on Tuesday at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandi (the Neasden Temple) where they met the inspirational Dr. Patel and ended with a visit to the ever popular London Eye.

We would like to say a massive thank you to all the people and attractions who made this residential the enjoyable experience that it was!  Whispers have already started on a possible London 2019 residential.

The atmosphere in Year Four these last few days was electric when they visited West Burton B CCGT Power Station, which is run by EDF Energy, as part of their topic on electricity.

When our little bright sparks arrived at the Power Station they were met by the Visitor Centre co-ordinator Lyz.  Lyz informed our Year Fours about West Burton B CCGT and after a rather interesting talk it was time to get kitted out in the appropriate safety gear for a tour around the site.  If you were under 10 years old the safety gear consisted of: a hi-vis jacket, gloves, safety glasses and the obligatory hard hat. However, if you were the wrong side of 10 you found yourself sporting a bright orange boiler suit, safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves and the hard hat, much to the delight of the children.

Buzzing with excitement, the children had a full tour of the plant (including the control room) and learnt that West Burton B CCGT is capable of generating enough electricity for approximately...

Today Year 4 took part in the Great Orchestra Experiment, which is organised by the Music Service. Both classes brought their guitars and took part in playing their instruments with lots of other children from other schools.

We got to hear how a whole orchestra plays songs together and take part in different singing activities too.

In Year 5 this term, we have all been lucky to attend Bulwell Academy Science sessions. During this session, the children became familiar with different parts of a microscope and then learnt how to use them correctly.

We then looked at different animal and plant cells trying to work out what they were.
